Do You Know The Difference Between Dyslexia And Adhd?

Another question that arises often is: What is the difference between dyslexia and ADHD? There are some similarities between the two but they are two different conditions. Let's take a look.

ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) or ADHD is a neurological disorder that affects the behavioral responses of an individual. ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is used when hyperactivity is involved It thought to be genetically and environmentally linked. It often affects children but there are adult sufferers too. Some children never get out of it into adulthood. It makes learning difficult because children cannot pay attention, have difficulties finishing home work, or are too impulsive offering answers too fast. Since they are hyperactive they will have problems with school authorities.

Dyslexia is a learning disorder where sufferers have difficulties with written content and have problems with reading and spelling. Like ADHD it is a neurologically based disorder. It is not considered an intellectual disability as it is present at all levels of intelligence.

Both ADD/ADHD and dyslexia lead to academic and other problems because of the way their symptoms affect the sufferers. Dyslexia sufferers have problems understanding written messages and producing written messages leading to spelling mistakes.

A number of children with ADHD also have Dyslexia. This leads to real problems for learning. But these children can learn to read and write like the other but they need special support. It comes in different levels of severity. It is manifested by difficulties in receptive and expressive language, including phonological processing, in reading, writing, spelling, handwriting, and even in arithmetic. You are not likely to get this kind of help in public schools so you may have to find a private school for your child or supplement what he gets from school by teaching him yourself.

Dyslexia and ADHD sufferers need a multi sensory teaching approach to succeed. Because they have difficulties differentiating phonics, they may need other approaches to teach them reading.
